Navarro supermarket sparks fire, injures veteran fire Captain
A veteran firefighter fell through the second floor of a Navarro Supermarket after it caught fire early Tuesday morning.
Just after midnight, police and fire crews rushed to the business, located at 1234 Southwest Eighth Street in Miami. Firefighters climbed onto the roof to locate the source of the flames and ventilate the building. After the majority of the fire was put out, fire rescue crews remained on the roof, looking for any hot spots. At that point, a mayday went out.
"That mayday was due to the fact that a Miami Fire Rescue Captain had fallen through the second floor down to the cement below," said Miami Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Joe Zahralban. "He apparently stepped on some A/C duct work and fell through."
The firefighter was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with complaints of pain and numbness to his lower limbs. He is listed in serious but stable condition.
Fire rescue is still at the business monitoring hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
